Have you heard about the end of Windows 10? Does simply reading that sentence send you into a cold sweat? Don’t panic! Spitzer Tech has the answers you need.

WAIT, WHAT IS HAPPENING?

At the end of October 2025, Microsoft will stop supporting the Windows 10 operating system (OS). Windows 10 can be found on most desktops and laptops. Best practice is to update to the Windows 11 OS.

WHY DO I CARE?

Great question! A new operating system release does not always mean your current one has to go. In this case, Microsoft is not releasing a new one but ending all support for the old one – known in the tech industry as EOL (end of life). The nuance there is vital.

As soon as Microsoft ceases to support Windows 10, that operating system will become vulnerable to corruption and hacking attempts. This poses a sincere security risk to businesses of all sizes.

EOL also means that, as time passes, software and hardware may no longer be compatible with Windows 10. Depending on what systems you use, this can happen very rapidly.

SO WHAT DO I DO?

The best practice is to update to the Windows 11 OS. As experts in this field, we recommend you update sooner rather than later so there is ample time to smooth out any bumps. The worst-case scenario is being forced into an update you are unprepared for due to the obsolescence of your current OS.

TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION

We suggest you sit down and consider the following questions before making the leap to Windows 11.

  1. What is my budget?
Companies may need to plan ahead to afford a wholesale OS switch. This could be a significant line item in your 2025 budget, depending on how many machines you employ.
  2. How much time will this take?
On average, this process will take 2 – 3 hours per machine, assuming the computer has been kept up to date and running smoothly. If not, it could take longer. Does your industry have a slower season of the year? Consider making this update a priority at that time. Our goal is to keep you working with limited interruption.
  3. Can all my machines handle a newer operating system?
If you are running older hardware, a new OS might make things worse rather than better. If this is true for you, consider whether you have the budget for a complete machine upgrade rather than just moving to the new OS.
Pro-tip: If you are buying a new machine, double-check that you are purchasing Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise. Windows 11 Home may not be adequate for business hardware.
