With this month’s time change, everyone’s minds are on the approaching spring. The days are getting longer and brighter. Sunglasses are coming out of drawers. Tulips are poking out of the ground. It’s time to consider some spring cleaning – and that includes your digital life as well.

Let’s start with some physical cleaning for your digital devices. Dust is the slow-creeping enemy of your productivity. Take a moment this week and bust out your microfiber towel, canned air, or rechargeable mini vacuum. Wipe down the surfaces you touch regularly, as well as any exhaust ports. These tiny grates are where your equipment draws in air to cool down it’s processors. It’s also where all the dirt can get inside. So do not miss this small and vital part of cleaning up your machine!

Next, take a look at what you’re actively using and what you’re not. This can apply to your inbox, your desktop, or your apps on your tablet. The less your machine needs to handle, the faster it will work. Archive what you can and prioritize the software, files, and tools you use the most. This will not only make your computer faster; it will make you more efficient while you use it!

We can’t talk about archiving without also mentioning backups. If you don’t already have regularly scheduled backups being made of all your mission-critical systems, now is a great time to get those in place. Backups provide peace of mind every day and can save you hours and hours of lost labor in the case of an equipment catastrophe.
