This week has seen some breaking tech news concerning the core of many’s computing experience: our internet browsers. Specifically, we are discussing Chrome, Firefox, and other Chromium-based browsers, like Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, and Edge. A series of security vulnerabilities have been discovered by both developers and hackers. This presents a bit of a Good News/Bad News situation.
The Bad News: The fact that these vulnerabilities are already known to hackers means that the security concerns are not hypothetical, they are real world and urgent. If hackers can get access to your browser, it opens the door to a lot more: passwords compromised, credit card information obtained, malware distributed, you name it. These exploited vulnerabilities are not something to take lightly.
The Good News: You can protect yourself! Browser developers have already put out an update to neutralize the threat (🥳). The only catch is that you need to take action to make sure your browser updates as soon as possible. Once updated, your browsing will be secure once more.
How do I update my browser? Great question – you’re so on it.
Go to your top right corner and click on your “more” icon. In chrome it looks like three dots stacked up, and in Firebox it is three lines, often referred to as a “hamburger” button.
From there navigate to the “Help” section, and then choose “About (browser name)”.
This will lead you to the opportunity to update, or confirmation that you are, in fact, up to date.
This may seem ultra simple but it will make a big difference. You can secure your machine right now by taking action!
