From the vantage point of April 2025, to say that the future of global trade is uncertain is a bit of an understatement. As business owners, we know that you are always trying to think one step ahead. Not knowing how and when import and export tariffs may change makes planning challenging. We do not have answers for you about what lies ahead. But we do have some thoughts to consider as you lay out your plans for the rest of the year. Check out this list of 5 things to remember while you worry about your small business amidst the whirlpool of the global economy.

  1. Change comes quick.

This can be both a good and a bad thing, so be ready to ride the wave! As we saw this week alone, the tariffs originally announced to begin Wednesday have been delayed for another 90 days. A lot can happen in that amount of time. Try to focus on what is within your own ability to control. Do your machines need updates? Have you been meaning to upgrade your computer’s hard drive, to extend its lifespan? Take care of these things now, so you can be prepared for what comes next.

  1. Not all technology is made in China.

In the United States, we often think that all our technology is assembled in China. It is worth taking a moment to look into where your products are actually assembled. Apple products are made in China, yes, but Dells are built in Mexico. Both Lenovo computers and Unifi gear are made in Vietnam. The current political climate is turning everyone’s eyes on the big players, but it is worth noting that the global economy is truly global. If you’re flexible with which brand you buy, you find cheaper alternatives out there.

  1. Consider buying refurbished.

Tariffs only apply to products being brought into the country! Everything that is already here should not experience a price increase, the way imported new products will. This includes used, remarketed, or refurbished technology. If you are in need of a new machine, consider looking into a certified refurbished option – helping your wallet and the planet at the same time. Our friends over at Green Century Recycling have some great solutions and their inventory is constantly changing.

  1. Talk to your community!

We’ve all heard the idiom, “Think globally, act locally.” This is great moment to live it! Talk to your friends, family, neighbors, fellow business owners. Express your concerns and hear theirs. There might be a solution right here in your neighborhood. If you are worried about needing new security cameras in the coming months, you might be able to split the cost of a system with the restaurant next door. You might be able to repurpose the laptop your real estate agent is upgrading. The server that no longer meets your company’s needs might be a total windfall to another organization. If we all work together, we can achieve so much more than when we work alone.

  1. Ask a professional.
